A Third Set of Grandparents
Betty and Carl Carmer were like grandparents to me and my sisters. They tolerated all sorts of childish games like mad chases around the Octagon House. They also tolerated various hi-jinks from my father and his brother, William D. Bowen. Betty sketched him at a New Years Eve party in the 1940s, and wrote the jocular comment: Too bad you don't really look like this, because to me it looks like someone I'd like to know.
Introducing Betty Carmer
Artist, illustrator, hostess and wife of Carl Carmer, Betty was a magical elfin presence at Octagon House.
